"I have a dream...″
These words were spoken by Baron Kishichiro Okura, founder of the first international luxury hotel in Tokyo. His aim was to offer all the modern conveniences of its rivals, yet retain the subtle charm and nuances of Japanese tradition. The opening of the Hotel Okura (now renamed“Hotel Okura Tokyo” )on May 20,1962 was the result of years of careful planning. The Baron methodically visited luxury hotels both within Japan and abroad, analyzing and critiquing their strengths and weaknesses, in an attempt to determine exactly what the perfect property should consist of.
Co-founder of the Hotel Okura, the late Iwajiro Noda, was an equally dynamic personality. For his efforts, he received numerous awards. His highest distinctions include the award of the Grand Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau from Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands for strengthening ties between the Netherlands and Japan, and the Second Class Order of the Rising Sun, granted by the Japanese Government, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to international tourism and cultural exchange.
The essence of their philosophy is immediately apparent upon entering the Hotel Okura. A tranquil ambiance welcomes weary travelers. “Shinsetsu” (Kindness) and “Wa” (Harmony)harmonize to create the ubiquitous serenity for which Hotel Okura Tokyo is renowned. With precise attention to detail, interior decorators meticulously designed the luxurious accommodations to reflect traditional elements of Japanese culture. More recently, the renowned Sir David Hicks, specially appointed designer to the British Royal Family, headed the effort to modernize room decor throughout the hotel, yet with the same attention to detail and tradition.
