Celebrating The 23rd Edition of an Exclusive Art Show

Hotel Okura Tokyo began holding the Treasured Works of Art Collection exhibitions in 1994. Each year, we select a unique theme and collect around 80 - 90 works from companies, private collectors and museums throughout Japan.
This year the exhibition is titled "In Praise of Great Beauties -painting figures of elegance and grace-" and will introduce various portraits and genre paintings, with a focus on works depicting women.
Approximately 70 Western-style paintings, Japanese paintings in the western-style, and nihonga, Japanese paintings, donated by approximately 25 companies, museums, organizations, and individuals will be on display.
The exhibition will focus on "human figures", a theme important to pictorial expression in both East and West, from old times to the present.

In Praise of Great Beauties
-painting figures of elegance and grace-

Chapter 1:The Portrait's Gaze

Focuses on the alluring women depicted in western paintings, and the figures of women as depicted in Japanese western style paintings.

Chapter 2:The Elegance and Grace seen in Bijin-ga

Introducing the figures of beautiful women born from delicate brush strokes, with a focus on the works of Uemura Shoen and Kaburaki Kiyokata, the two giants of the "bijin-ga" painting developed from the pre-Edo era tradition of paintings of beautiful women.

Chapter 3:The Allure of Human Figures

The depictions of the characters appearing in written works and the varied expressions shown by the people appearing in everyday scenes are truly alluring. Presenting emotion-filled works such as Kaburaki Kiyokata's "Ugetsu Monogatari" series and Chagall's family portraits and fantastical paintings of day-to-day life.
